Korea has entered a 'super-aged society' with the proportion of people aged 65 or older accounting for more than 20% of the resident registration population.

According to the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, as of the 23rd, the number of registered residents aged 65 or older stood at 10.24 million, accounting for 20.00 percent of the total resident registration population (51,221,286).

According to the United Nations (UN), more than 7% of the population aged 65 or older accounts for the total population, 14% or more is an aged society, and 20% or more is a super-aged society.

One of the biggest social problems in this super-aged society is 'Dementia'.

About 1 in 10 people over the age of 65 in Korea are dementia patients, and the incidence of dementia over the age of 65 has increased by more than 25% compared to five years ago. The Central Dementia Center expects the number of dementia patients to reach about 1.08 million by 2025. In addition, according to the 2022 Korea dementia status data, the average annual management cost of dementia patients was 21.12 million won per person. As of 2021, the socioeconomic cost of mild cognitive impairment, which is the pre-dementia stage, is about 5 trillion won. This is the background that needs to be prevented before the onset of dementia.

Healthy eating habits and regular exercise habits are prioritized in preventing dementia, but there is also a high interest in ingredients that help improve cognitive performance due to aging.

Phosphatidylserine is one of the components that has recently attracted the most attention.

Phosphatidylcerin, a type of phospholipid, is a component of the cell membrane that allows brain cells to function properly, and as aging progresses, the amount decreases, resulting in memory loss and cognitive decline due to brain cell functional degeneration.

Phosphatidylserine has the effect of maintaining an appropriate amount of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter, to strengthen memory and cognition, and to suppress the accumulation of beta-amyloid, which is pointed out as a causative agent of dementia. However, since it is a very small amount that can be consumed through meals, supplementing it with nutritional supplements is also a way.

Phosphatidylcerin is certified by the U.S. FDA as a raw material that reduces the risk of dementia and cognitive impairment in the elderly and helps improve cognitive performance, and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in Korea has also recognized it as a functional ingredient for brain health that can help improve cognitive performance that has deteriorated due to aging. It is known to have improvements in memory loss, cognitive decline, and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).

Domestic pharmaceutical companies and health functional food companies, including JW Pharmaceutical, Daewoong Pharmaceutical, Dongkuk Pharmaceutical, Huons, Ildong Hoodies, CJ Wellcare, and KGC Ginseng Corporation, are also launching health functional foods containing phosphatidylcerin.
