A dizzying slope...3 injuries to watch out for at ski resorts

According to the Korea Consumer Agency, a total of 1,234 ski and snowboard safety accidents were reported to the consumer harm system from 2019 to 2023. It has increased every year since 2021, with 443 cases received last year, up 86.9% year-on-year (237). Among them, 1,137 cases of slip or fall were reported, accounting for 92.1% of the total, followed by 56 cases of injuries caused by collisions.
As such, frequent injuries in ski resorts are mainly related to the musculoskeletal system, but ultraviolet rays are also considered a risk factor to be careful. I picked three injuries to watch out for at the ski resort.
First of all, skiing and snowboarding are sports that speed up in cold weather, so falls are the most dangerous. It is recommended to use a slope suitable for the level and to maintain a safe distance so as not to collide with others. You also need to learn how to fall well, and in the case of skiing, you need to let go of the pole to reduce finger injuries.
Skiing and snowboarding have different areas of injury. In general, when a person falls during a downhill, 'ski' falls sideways and uses his lower body, and 's snowboard' falls forward or backward, using his upper body a lot, indicating a difference in the injury area. In the event of a suspected fracture, it is important to report it to 119 or safety personnel at the site, and to fix the area so that it does not move.
Second, in ski resorts, the amount of ultraviolet reflection by snow is large, so the skin must be protected from ultraviolet rays. UV rays promote skin pigmentation reactions and skin aging. Therefore, it is recommended to use a sunscreen cream with an SPF index of 30 or more, and you must block the ultraviolet rays with goggles and hats.
Third, ultraviolet-related corneal burns should also be careful. In ski resorts, ultraviolet reflectance is as high as 85%, which makes it easy to strain the eyes. Wearing goggles is essential for eye protection. Goggles can block 100% of ultraviolet rays, and it is recommended to choose ones with a lens color concentration of 70 to 80%, which is not too dark.
