Police have arrested a suspect who set fire to a woman passenger's clothing sleeping on a subway in New York, the United States.

The suspect is a 33-year-old man who came to the United States from Guatemala in 2018.

According to the New York Post and other U.S. media, a man set fire to a woman's passenger clothes on a stopped train at Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue Station on the New York subway at around 7:30 a.m. on the 22nd (local time).

The police explained, `When the train entered the station, the suspect quietly approached the victim, who was sitting at the end of the subway car, lit the victim's clothes with a lighter, and within seconds the fire spread completely.'

A police officer patrolling the neighborhood witnessed the victim and put out the fire, but he finally died.

The suspect was sitting on a chair outside the car and ran away wearing a hat on his hoodie as police gathered.

After checking the CCTV footage, the police saw the man as a suspect and urgently wanted him.

In particular, the man reportedly watched the victim burn to death on the platform after committing the crime.

Police were dispatched late at night after receiving a report that they saw a suspect at another station and arrested him in the car.

In the suspect's pocket was a lighter that appeared to have been used in the crime.

The police said they plan to continue the investigation, saying, `The suspect and the victim do not appear to have known each other.'

Meanwhile, the victim's identity has not yet been identified.
