Five years for a cancer patient... I'm touched by the surgeon's comments

Dec 23, 2024

A surgeon at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital left a thank-you note to patients who were cured after stomach cancer surgery for Christmas and the end of the year.

Professor Song Kyo-young of Gastrointestinal Surgery is doing his best by sincerely sympathizing with patients every time he meets a patient in order to become a doctor who listens to the patient's heart.

When I heard that I usually have a big disease called gastric cancer, I saw most of the patients panicked and unexpected, and I thought about what the patient felt and what he wanted to talk to the doctor, not just curious about the patient's disease itself. As part of the method, a small ceremony is also held to take commemorative photos in the clinic in celebration of patients who have celebrated five years after surgery like family members.

Professor Song expressed his gratitude, saying, `As a doctor who has been sick, I also see patients and their families who overcome the serious illness of cancer, not a mild cold, and I realize once again that I have to do something and that it means a lot.' `I wish you a healthier and happier Christmas and New Year's holidays to commemorate your new birth, congratulations once again and thank you for overcoming it.'

The experience of meeting an extreme opponent called cancer while living is simply scary, angry, sad, and unfair. It's ironic that I destroy parts of my body to overcome the enemy. Every single story of those who meet as doctors is precious, but it is just a job and daily life, so it is easy to become dull and calm over time. In the meantime, when I see the patients in front of me who are happy to win the long fight, I think again that I have to do something and that means a lot.

Five years of medical significance in the fight against cancer. The fact that the recurrence rate of gastric cancer is extremely low five years after surgery is explained by the formula of '5 year survival = survival rate' (if you live well for five years, you live well without recurrence). However, this also means that you should be anxious for at least five years while being diagnosed and treated for cancer.

Even if you have completed surgery and chemotherapy well, you repeat your heart pounding countless times like a test taker who expects to pass the exam every regular checkup. Those who have done a good job of five years of testing and a small ceremony in a small clinic space of two sepyong are now the goal of patients undergoing surgery. The young patient whose surgery has been decided today will be treated well and take a commemorative photo with the professor," he says, explaining his determination. "Time goes by like an arrow, and it's going to be five years."

So today, several patients and their families celebrated the happiest day of being born in the world. Some came dressed beautifully and dressed beautifully, and some gentleman dressed properly. I can feel the hearts of the patients. And I think I deserve to be celebrated and happy enough.

Five years may be short, but it is a very long time. So many things happen during this time. They are taken to the emergency room due to poor food control, collapsed due to severe dumping, and are tested for PET or something because the test results are abnormal. Some people get scolded by their doctor for not controlling their daily life well, and sometimes they get into friction with their family members due to anger and anxiety that they don't know why. It's just sad for no reason.

The course after cancer treatment is ultimately influenced by the body's immune status. Decreased immunity can be directly linked to recurrence, so poor nutrition or decreased muscle mass is very bad. You should eat well, gain weight, and work hard to maintain your muscles. Some patients have to constantly visit Jeju Island from Busan, Gwangju, and far away rural areas for regular check-ups by using various transportation means from dawn to 5 hours.

It's been five years since I spent it like that. It's only natural to wipe and celebrate the blood and sweat. Surgery and testing is the role of 5% of the medical staff, but essentially it is 95% of the patient's efforts to overcome the disease. I hope you have a healthier and happier Christmas and the end of the year to celebrate your new birth, congratulations once again and thank you for overcoming it well.
