Gangdong Kyunghee University Hospital's national integrated bio-big data construction project begins for the first time
Dec 28, 2024
Gangdong Kyunghee University Hospital (Director Lee Woo-in) recently started its business for the first time among 38 participating medical institutions in the 「National Integrated Bio-Big Data Construction Project」 and completed the registration of the first general public participant at the National Examination Center in the hospital.
Gangdong Kyunghee University Hospital was selected as an organization to carry out the national integrated biological data construction project on July 31, and Professor Lee Sang-ho (Xinjiang Internal Medicine), a lead researcher, established the National Integrated Biological Data Construction Project Secretariat on the floor to prepare a sample collection and participant management system in cooperation with related agencies and various departments. On December 23, it opened the business for the first time as a participating medical institution, and even registered as the first general public participant. Gangdong Kyunghee University Hospital plans to recruit general participants in earnest with the start of the project.
The National Integrated Biological Data Construction Project is a large-scale R&D project hosted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an agency under the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Based on the voluntary participation and consent of the public, the goal is to build and open big data by integrating individual-centered medical data such as clinical information, public data, and dielectric data of general public participants, rare patients, severely ill patients, and cancer patients.
On December 19, a total of 38 participating medical institutions, including government agencies, related organizations, and Gangdong Kyunghee University Hospital, attended the launch ceremony of the National Integrated Bio-Big Data Construction Project Group.
The general public participants of the National Integrated Biological Data Construction Project can freely participate (blood and urine collection) and receive compensation for time and movement when participating in the project.
Data and samples collected from participants will be safely stored and utilized through Data Bank (Korea Health and Medical Information Service's Human Derivatives Bank) and Bio Bank (Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Human Resources Bank), and will be open to researchers such as universities and hospitals from 2026 for future research such as precision medical and digital healthcare development.
