Spanish nutritionist Luis Alberto Samora cited research results from the University of Michigan in the United States to emphasize the harmfulness to ultra-processed foods (UPFs).
According to foreign media such as the Daily Mail, a University of Michigan research team previously published the results of a study on the link between ultra-processed food and life expectancy in the journal 『Nature Food』.
Studies have shown that one hot dog can shorten life by an average of 36 minutes, and drinking soda together can reduce life by another 12 minutes.
There can also be a life reduction of about 9 minutes for cheeseburgers, 6 minutes for bacon, and 3.3 minutes for fried chicken wings.
On the other hand, eating certain kinds of fish is expected to extend the lifespan by 28 minutes, add about 26 minutes for peanuts, about 24 minutes for nuts, about 16 minutes for smoked salmon, about 13 minutes for rice mixed with beans, and about 10 minutes for fruit, the research team said.
In addition, the research team added that eating fruits and vegetables instead of beef and processed meat can extend life by about 48 minutes.
On the other hand, ultra-processed food refers to food manufactured from processed raw materials produced by industrial processes.
They include fast food, sweetened beverages, mass-produced bread, snacks, instant ramen, frozen and ready-made foods, processed meat (ham, sausage), sauces and dressings, etc. In addition, it uses ingredients that are not commonly used in general home cooking, and refers to foods containing colorants, artificial sweeteners, artificial fragrances, and preservatives.
Recently, a study found that people who consume a lot of ultra-processed foods may age biologically about four months earlier than their actual age. On the other hand, those who consumed less ultra-processed food were found to be on average two months younger than their biological age.
