It has been argued that the ingredient 'Minoxidil', a hair loss treatment ingredient, can be fatal to cats and dogs.

According to the U.S. media New York Post, Dr. Joe Whittington, a veterinarian with more than 2 million followers, delivered a public service advertisement video on TikTok about the dangers of hair loss treatments.

Minoxidil is an active ingredient in topical products, including logains, made into products that promote hair growth.

Minoxidil is used in the form of an edible pill and as a topically applied liquid and gel.

Unlike oral drugs, which are prescription drugs, topical application types can be easily purchased as over-the-counter drugs.

Dr Whittington says "Minoxidil is so toxic that even the slightest contact of a pet can be life-threatening""Just walking on the fallen residue or licking the skin with the product on it can cause serious toxicity" he explained. "After use, you have to wash your hands, clean them if they fall on the bathroom floor, and keep them out of reach to protect your pet," he said," he stressed.

Netizens say "The toxicity is so strong that a single lick can kill a pet.", "I was going to buy minoxidil because my hair loss got worse, but I'm hesitating because my cat always sleeps next to me.", "If you've applied medicine, don't let your pets sleep on pillows.", Posted comments such as "'Just take it as a pill'.

Recently, there are similar treatment and research cases in animal hospitals in Korea.

In the case published in the international SCI journal `Veterinary Sciences', a cat was treated for hemodialysis after being exposed to 'minoxidil' and showing symptoms of addiction such as severe hypotension and hypothermia.

According to Nam-ryeong, a professor at Konkuk University's Veterinary College, and researchers at Shin Sinsa headquarters at Smart Animal Hospital, minoxidil can cause fatal poisoning symptoms in dogs (puppies) and cats.

It can also cause low energy, loss of appetite, vomiting, as well as hypotension in severe cases.

In particular, in the case of an applied formulation, addiction symptoms may appear just by skin exposure in companion animals, so care must be taken in use and storage.
