A high-ranking Malaysian state government official has proposed a tourism commercialization of floods, sparking controversy.

According to local media such as Lacart Post, Datuk Camarudin Noor, chairman of the Malaysian Kelantan Tourism, Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee (EXCO), suggested turning Kelantan's annual flood into a tourist attraction in an interview with a broadcaster.

He argued that tourists are cut off during the rainy monsoon season, and that he wants to promote this period as an attractive season for people to visit.

In the meantime, an example is surfing in flooded water in mid-December.

He also proposed promoting 'original' traditional food during the monsoon season to boost local businesses.

When his remarks came out, criticism poured in online.

Netizens are amazed to learn that the idea is ridiculous and even dangerous because flood waters can transmit diseases. "Turning a blind eye to thousands of people displaced by floodwaters" and "Tourism is a commodity when people are dying."", "Wouldn't tourists be afraid of flooding?" have a negative reaction such as.

Meanwhile, according to Malaysia's National Disaster Command Center, four people have been killed and thousands displaced in recent floods across Kelantan, Terengganu and Sarawak.
