The Korea Food and Drug Safety Evaluation Institute, affiliated with the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, said on the 26th that it has launched a joint study with the United Nations Office on Drug Crime to provide a scientific basis for designating and managing new drugs as drugs.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is an international organization that oversees drug prevention, crime response, and rehabilitation worldwide. It is an organization under the United Nations Secretariat established in 1997 to respond to illegal drugs and international criminal issues.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, together with UNODC and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), will prepare a total of four international guidelines by 2028 based on the existing guidelines for evaluating dependence on the publication of the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. The four international guidelines are planned to be finalized after expert review and collection of opinions from each country.
In September last year, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and the UNODC signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to share mutual experiences and capabilities to effectively respond to domestic and foreign drug problems, and as a follow-up measure, the joint research was promoted.
"The joint establishment of international guidelines with the UNODC is meaningful in that Korea will lead the establishment of international standards for drug dependence evaluation technology for the first time," said Kang Seok-yeon, head of the Evaluation Institute. "We will continue to cooperate with UNODC to improve domestic and foreign drug safety management and drug addiction prevention and rehabilitation capabilities in the future."
