Professor Kim Sung-jae of Gyeongsang National University Hospital wins the Segwang Academic Award of the Korean Ophthalmology Society

Dec 17, 2024

Gyeongsang National University Hospital (Hospital Director Ahn Sung-ki) announced on the 17th that Professor Kim Sung-jae was honored with the Segwang Academic Award at the 132nd Fall Conference of the Korean Ophthalmology Society in 2024 held at COEX for three days from November 29th.

The subject of this Sekwang Academic Award research is an "Omnipotent Artificial Bag" that can fix all artificial lenses.

Cataract is a major disease that about 30% of the world's population suffers from, and more than 600,000 cataract surgeries were performed in Korea last year alone. In particular, with the recent development of multifocal artificial lens technology, the number of cataract surgeries among young people in their 40s and 50s is rapidly increasing.

Cataract surgery removes the cloudy lens and inserts an artificial lens into the lens bag to replace it, which is connected by a thread-shaped string thinner than hair called ciliate plaques.

However, during trauma or cataract surgery, the lens sac or cilia is damaged, or after cataract surgery, the artificial lens may not be in place and dislocated due to fibrosis of the lens sac. In this case, the current technology requires replacing the inserted artificial lens, and the surgical method is not easy and many complications can occur.

Professor Kim Sung-jae jointly developed 'artificial lens bag' with Professor Yoo Woong-sun (an ophthalmology at Kyungsang National University Hospital) and Professor Um Young-seop (an ophthalmology at Korea University Ansan Hospital) is a technology that can easily fix all types of artificial lenses currently in use in Korea, including multifocal artificial lenses, and has won the Segwang Academic Award for its achievements as a safe way to reduce surgery time and prevent complications such as increased intraocular pressure.

Professor Kim Sung-jae said, `If this prosthetic lens bag is advanced and applied to actual patients in the future, we expect to preserve the eyesight of patients with prosthetic lens dislocation, which is increasing due to aging.'

In addition, Professor Kim Sung-jae founded Jinun, a clinical trial support organization, and is participating in the Gyeongsang National University Hospital Convergence Medical Life Open Laboratory Project and the Gyeongsang National University Startup-Centered University Project Group, and plans to conduct non-clinical and clinical trials to prove the stability of the technology in the future.
