Lee Geun-young, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Hallym University Gangnam Sacred Heart Hospital, gave a lecture on the theme of the "2024 Birthday Congress" at the international academic conference held in Istanbul, Turkey from the 5th to the 7th.

The World Society of Obstetrics and International Society 'Birth' holds an international conference 'Birth Congress' to discuss the latest research and clinical challenges related to delivery every year. In this '2024 Birthday Congress-Clinical Challenges in Labor and Delivery', the topic of high-risk pregnancy and delivery in general, including preterm birth, was addressed.

As the domestic preterm birth rate steadily increases, interest in the prevention of preterm birth is also growing. According to a survey by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs, the proportion of premature babies born in Korea in 2011 was 6%, while it increased by about 1.5 times to 9.2% in 2021. Preterm birth, which takes place before 37 weeks of pregnancy, can pose health risks to both mothers and babies, so it is important to prevent it. Cervical incapacity is considered one of the main causes of premature birth, and cervical encapsulation, a treatment, is drawing attention.

In response, Professor Lee Geun-young explained at this conference that ▲ the necessity of integrated cervical encapsulation guidelines between societies in each country ▲ presentation of integrated cervical encapsulation guidelines through analysis of research papers ▲ The cervical incapacity clinic at Hanlim University Gangnam Sacred Heart Hospital ▲ surgical instrument Lee's Cerclage Balloon used for emergency cervical encapsulation.

Professor Lee Keun-young emphasized that "whether to perform cervical suture should be determined by experienced medical staff after fully grasping the patient's medical information and clinical situation.". "In the future, we will continue to discuss high-risk pregnancy with medical staff around the world and continue to study to save precious lives of mothers and children."

Meanwhile, Professor Lee Geun-young, an expert in high-risk pregnancy and premature birth treatment, runs the only cervical incapacity clinic in university hospitals, contributing to high-risk mothers to maintain pregnancy safely and protect their precious lives.

In addition, Professor Son Ga-hyun and Professor Song Ji-eun of obstetrics and gynecology at Hanlim University's Gangnam Sacred Heart Hospital, Professor Han Ye-seul of the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescents, and Professor Jeong Se-ri of the Department of Diagnostic Laboratory Medicine operate a biobank to conduct various clinical brokerage studies related to cervical incapacity and premature birth.

Professor Geun-young Lee published the world's first study in 2020 that showed that abdominal cervical encapsulation can increase the survival rate of single and twin infants by 91% and 94%, respectively, in a paper titled 「Outcomes after transabdominal circulation with preemptive successful transvaginal circulation」.
