Professor Lee Ji-yeol of the Department of Urology at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital of Catholic University achieved 2,000 robotic surgeries.

On the 18th, the hospital held an event to commemorate this in the operating room on the fifth floor of the hospital. The event was attended by medical staff from the urology department, the head of the robotic surgery center, and medical staff from outpatient and surgical nursing teams.

Professor Lee Ji-yeol has continued to develop high-level cancer surgery such as prostate cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer, and other minimally invasive surgery for various urological diseases through the 4th generation 'Davinci Xi' in 2016 and 2018 'Davinci SP' in 2021 and the 4th generation 'Davinci SP' robotic surgery machine.

The urological cancer team at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital has not only specialized in robotic surgery, but has also integrated several state-of-the-art treatment options to provide the best treatment for patients. For metastatic prostate cancer that does not respond to anticancer drugs, Lutechium (Lu-177) treatment targeting cancer cells using radioactive isotopes has been performed for the first time in Korea. On the other hand, for local prostate cancer, nanoknife treatment is the only one in Korea that removes cancer cells using an electric field.

As a result of surgical and clinical research efforts centered on Professor Lee, Seoul St. Mary's Hospital ranked 18th worldwide in the urology category of the world's best hospital by specialty field in 2024 selected by the U.S. weekly Newsweek and global market research firm Statista.

Professor Lee Ji-yeol said, "At the Robot Surgery Center of Seoul St. Mary's Hospital, various clinical departments such as urology, surgery, and obstetrics and gynecology are cooperating to conduct robotic surgery."It successfully performs high-level surgery such as cancer surgery and continues to develop patient-centered, customized surgery methods." he said. In addition, "We will strive to provide the best care for patients through cutting-edge robotic surgery techniques and expertise of our medical staff."

Meanwhile, Professor Lee Ji-yeol has been active in the treatment of urological cancer at home and abroad, serving as the Asia-Pacific Urological Oncology President (APUOS), the Asia-Pacific Prostate Society (APPS), the Korean Prostate Society President, the Catholic Cancer Research Institute, and the Prostate Research Institute.

In addition, for the development of the latest treatments for urological cancer and the development of robotic surgery technology, research papers are published in a number of domestic and foreign journals, actively participate in international conferences, and education and mentoring programs for junior doctors are also being operated to cultivate talent to lead the future of urology.
