An explosive device exploded in downtown Moscow, killing the commander of the Russian nuclear defense forces.

According to CNN and other foreign media, an electric scooter built in an apartment complex in Moscow exploded early on the 17th (local time). The explosives were found to have been hidden in an electric scooter.

The explosion killed Lt. Gen. Igor Kirilov, 54, head of Russia's nuclear and biochemical defense forces, and his aide.

The site of the explosion is only 7km away from the Kremlin, Putin's office.

The explosives were remotely operated, state news agency TAS reported, citing Russian intelligence agencies.

It also said that the explosive power was similar to 300g of TNT.

Ukraine is suspected of being behind the explosion.

Earlier, the SBU, a Ukrainian security agency, indicted Kirilov in absentia. Ukraine claimed Kirilov was responsible for the large use of banned chemical weapons.

The SBU noted that it used chemical weapons more than 4,800 times under Kirillov's command.

Russia denies using chemical weapons.
