A report showed that a series of violent crimes such as rape and murder are occurring at the construction site of the future new city 'NEOM City' that Saudi Arabia is ambitiously pursuing. A camp to accommodate more than 100,000 construction workers is set up at the construction site of 'Neom City', which is under construction for $1 trillion (about 1,470 trillion won).

Citing the report, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) claimed that camps where foreign workers such as Pakistan and Bangladesh stay are suffering from mass rape, assault, and murder.

According to the report, workers recently sneaked alcohol into the camp and engaged in a collective scuffle with security guards, and one worker self-inflicted, saying he was not being paid. There were also several deaths at the scene, with one British company pointing out that safety procedures were not properly followed.

In addition, at the construction site of a collective residence 'The Line', one of the Neom City plans, 21,000 workers have been claimed to have lost their lives in the past eight years.

'The Line' is a huge straight building with a height of 500m and a length of 170km, and plans to accommodate about 9 million people.

According to the British media Daily Mail, there were violent protests by workers protesting the quality of food in 2023, as well as drug overdoses and drug sales. There have also been cases of mass rape, suicide, and even murder, but they are not properly known to the outside world.

In November this year, Neom CEO Nadmi al-Nasr was fired for threatening to bury workers in the desert.

The unreasonable construction process has led to grim estimates that The Line will not be completed over the next 50 years.

Neom said "Construction is underway as planned" and that efforts are being made to improve safety standards and to improve the welfare of workers"

Meanwhile, Neom is a key project of Saudi Arabia's real power Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman's 2017 decarbonization national development plan Vision 2030, and plans to build an eco-friendly smart city, a high-tech industrial complex on the sea, and a mountain tourism complex where the 2029 Winter Asian Games will be held in deserts and mountainous areas adjacent to the Red Sea.

Neom's collective residence 'The Line' is powered by eco-friendly energy such as hydrogen and solar light, and residents move by high-speed trains and air taxis because there are no roads or cars.
