A plane belonging to British low-cost airline TUI Airlines, which departed from Brussels Airport in Belgium at around 1:35 p.m. on the 22nd (local time), was struck by lightning on its way to the Egyptian resort of Furugada.
As a result, the plane returned to Brussels Airport as a precaution.
At the time, some passengers reported that they smelled "the smell of burning with the sound of a bang".
Another passenger claimed "Suddenly, I heard an explosion with a flash."
In addition, lightning struck a cargo plane heading to Qatar on the same day.
Video footage taken on a vehicle's black box on the Brussels Ring Road showed a lightning strike falling through the plane to the ground. However, the plane continued its operation and arrived safely in Qatar.
An airline pilot said "It's common for lightning to fall on an aircraft."
He said "Droping can make some instruments work strangely, but it's generally not a serious problem. Lightning can come in at one end and go out at the other, and there can only be surface damage" he claimed. He then added "However, after the lightning strike, an inspection is needed to ensure that the electronic device, the machine, is not broken."
According to one statistic, an airliner is struck by lightning every 5,000 hours, or once a year.
