The Stem Cell Regeneration Research Team at Gangdong Kyunghee University Hospital won the Korea Athletic Stem Cell Regeneration Medicine Association's Excellence Award
Dec 20, 2024
A stem cell regeneration research team led by Professor Kim Kang-il of orthopedics at Gangdong Kyunghee University Hospital (Director Lee Woo-in) won the Outstanding Story Award at the 21st Fall Conference of the Korean Society of Stem Cell Regeneration Medicine held at St. Mary's Hospital in Seoul on November 10. The research team presented the theme of 『Analyzing the optimal timing of injection of fracture healing through intravenous injection of homogeneous stem cells』.
This study is significant in that it found the optimal point of stem cell injection based on the stage of fracture healing. Professor Koo Ki-hyuk, who was in charge of the presentation, said "As the aging progresses, the importance of stem cell regenerative medicine in the orthopedic field will increase", and "In the future, the research team plans to continue research applicable to clinical practice based on accumulated know-how".
Adult stem cells, which exist in various tissues such as adult adipose tissue, bone marrow, and blood, have the ability to differentiate into several tissues, drawing attention as a new solution to the treatment of intractable diseases in various medical fields including orthopedic surgery. This possibility is directly related to the development of the field of regenerative medicine for orthopedic treatment in an aging society.
The orthopedic stem cell research team, which is leading the development of regenerative medicine, is actively conducting research on various areas of orthopedic surgery, including Kim Myung-seo, Lee Hyo-beom, and Koo Ki-hyuk, and Cho Hyun-mi, who majored in life science, and Chung Hyun-joo, who are affiliated with the Medical Research Institute affiliated with Gangdong Kyunghee University Hospital. It has reported years of award-winning and excellent research results, and its application to clinical practice is also actively underway.
