Russia's high-ranking cruise missile researcher was shot and killed near Moscow.

Ukrainian media reported that he was assassinated by Ukrainian intelligence.

According to Russian media, including the Moscow Times, cruise missile researcher Mikhail Shatsky was shot and killed by an unidentified assassin in Kuzminki Forest Park, a suburb of Kotelnik, southeast of Moscow, on the 11th (local time).

He was deputy director and software director of the Moscow Bureau of Experimental Design, which develops automatic control and navigation systems for satellites and unmanned aircraft. He worked as a subsidiary of the Russian state-owned nuclear power company 'Rosatom'.

Aleksandr Nevzorov, an exiled opposition journalist who first broke the news of the assassination, said Shatsky was involved in upgrading the Kh-59 cruise missile to a low-flying, subsonic version of Kh-69.

Russian forces are using Kh-59, Kh-69, and Kh-101 missiles in Ukraine.

He is also said to have been responsible for developing the latest types of UAVs (military drones).

Citing unnamed sources, Ukrainian media, including RBC and Ukraine's Prouda, reported that Shatsky was killed as part of a 'special operation' carried out by HUR, the Ukrainian military's defence intelligence service.

Exiled Russian journalist Nevzorov reports "Shatsky, head of cruise missile research and development, is responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent Ukrainian people," he stressed.
