According to foreign media such as The Sun, researchers from the Woods Hole Ocean Research Institute (WHOI) and the Millennium Oceanographic Institute (IMO) in Chile recently captured carnivorous shrimp-like creatures in the deep sea about 8,000m in the Atacama Trench in front of Peru and Chile.
The white-colored new large predatory crustacean was about 4 cm long and appeared to have tentacles for hunting other creatures. The scientists named this fish species 'Dulcibella camanchaca'.
It means 'dark' in the Andean language.
Dr. Johanna Weston of the WHOI explained that "DNA tests have shown that this creature is a new species and genus".
Dr. Karolina Gonzalez of IMO said "This discovery demonstrates the importance of continuous deep-sea exploration of the Atacama Trench"We plan to conduct further research."
Meanwhile, the Atacama Trench is a deep sea off the coast of Peru and Chile, with a maximum depth of 8065 meters.
