Apple TV+ documentary film 「The Last Haenyeo」 is a documentary film that explores the lives of haenyeo by shedding light on the special solidarity of young and old generation haenyeo to preserve their traditions. Haenyeos who have been collecting seafood from the seabed without oxygen tanks for centuries to make ends meet. Last haenyeo' draws attention to the image of the younger generation trying to revive the tradition of haenyeo in danger of extinction through social media, and the older generation haenyeo with their unique strength and joy to join forces to protect their own haenyeo culture.
Lighting up the colorful appearance of haenyeo ranging from strong friendship to wisdom and confidence, Last Haenyeo will resonate around the world with the story of the driving force and life of haenyeo who stand up to protect their beloved sea. Expectations are high for capturing the lives of Korean Jeju haenyeo, also called real-life mermaids, The Last Haenyeo will be released worldwide on Apple TV+ on Oct. 11. Prior to its release, it will also debut as an official screening of the documentary category at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival.
The last haenyeo was directed and produced by Su Kim, and was co-produced by Malala Yousafzai and Erica Kenard of Extracurricular. Additionally, A24's Nicole Stott, Emily Osborne, Harry Go, and Marissa Torres Erickson were named in the executive production.
