The Korean Film Council announced on the 4th that 'Seoul Spring' was selected as a Korean film entry in the International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Film Awards to be held next year.
'Seoul Spring ' is a movie about a nine-hour period in which a security commander revolted on December 12, 1979, and mobilized all private organizations in the military and brought even front-line troops to Seoul to fight against suppression forces. It is attracting global attention by being invited to leading foreign film festivals such as the 23rd New York Asian Film Festival and the 26th Woodyne Far East Film Festival.
The film was unanimously selected as a Korean film entry in the International Feature Film category at the U.S. Academy Film Awards. Regarding the reason for the selection, the jury for the selection of the entry said that there was little disagreement about the "completeness of the work" in that it evenly encompasses the dramatic fun of the film dealing with tension, the directing ability to maximize the actors' acting feast as mise-en-scène's domain, and excellent insights into history. In addition, "We hope that the illusions and caricatures of evil about the charisma of this work will appeal to the Academy Film Awards as a poetic metaphor in terms of the theme of the film."
Released in November last year, 'Seoul Spring' surpassed 10 million viewers in about a month, becoming the first movie to attract 10 million viewers since the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, it became the top box office hit in the 2020s, beating 'The Crime City 3', which attracted more than 13 million viewers and achieving the highest number of audiences in the same year. It was also released in foreign countries such as the U.S., Australia, Taiwan, and Japan.
Meanwhile, the 97th Academy Film Awards ceremony will be held in March of next year, and the preliminary selection of candidates for the upcoming exhibition 'Seoul Spring' will be confirmed later this year. The Korean Film Council receives a recommendation from the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) for one Korean film to be submitted in the International Feature Film category at the Academy of Motion Picture Awards, and selects the entries through a public screening every year.
According to AMPAS's rules for the composition of the international funeral division's judging committee, which have changed since last year, the judging panel consists of at least five experienced experts in the film field, and must obtain prior approval from AMPAS to act as a judge. This year, a total of 15 films were submitted as candidates, including 'Damyo'Spring of Seoul'Veteran 2'.
