Art director Ryu Sung-hee shared what he felt while working on the movie Memories of Murder with director Bong Joon-ho.

In a press conference held at the Film Industry Center in Haeundae-gu, Busan on the afternoon of the 5th, art director Ryu Sung-hee said, `When director Bong Joon-ho directed Memories of Murder, everything was perfect as if he had already prepared from his past life.'

Art director Ryu made his commercial film debut in 2002 with director Ryu Seung-wan's 'Without Blood and Tears'. Since then, he has established himself as a representative Korean art director by participating in a number of works, including 'Memories of Murder', 'Old Boy', 'Monster', 'Bat', 'Bat', 'Bat'Bat', 'Gojijeon', 'Ode to International Market', 'Death Decision'. In particular, 'Lady', who worked with director Park Chan-wook for the second time, became the first Korean to win the Vulcan Award at the 2016 Cannes International Film Festival, spreading Korean film art to the world.

Artistic director Liu "I was lucky. If it weren't for Ryu Seung-wan, Bong Joon-ho, and Park Chan-ho, I would have been thrown out of the film industry sooner. "When I came back to Korea, there was a female art director, and most of them were male art directors. I didn't know anyone in Korea, so I created my own portfolio and searched for all the famous film companies. At that time, the production company said they would contact me at least once if a melodrama or romance was produced. There was a firm recognition that creative genre movies were 'male territory', and I wanted to break this prejudice. After that, new directors such as Ryu Seung-wan, Bong Joon-ho, and Park Chan-wook came and opened up opportunities for me and led the renaissance of Korean cinema."

Art director Ryu also talked about the differences he felt while working with the three directors. First of all, director Ryu Seung-wan said, "I'm doing the first genre movie I've been waiting for every year with an action movie featuring two female protagonists. Director Ryu is such a movie fanatic that he is full of energy when he makes his work." Like him, I thought deeply about how to lose the energy of the movie and continue with it."

Recalling his work with director Bong Joon-ho, he said, `I learned about integrating genres.' In the meantime, "Bong is a year older than Director Bong, and the director was perfect in every preparation as if he had already prepared 'Memories of Murder' from his previous life. It happened at that time, but I learned the local community of Korea from him. As I asked questions about locality, I was able to learn and share the process of realizing the feeling of being the closest but unfamiliar than the country at the end of the world," he said.

He also mentioned director Park Chan-wook, who shared 'Old Boy', 'Lady', 'Decision to Break Up'. Art director Ryu said, "Like me, he doesn't want to give a clear definition of what beauty is, what is ugliness, and what are the dancers there?" and added, "His worldview, which keeps asking questions and rather vaguely asking questions to the audience, fits me so well. I'm still enjoying the process together" expressed satisfaction.

Meanwhile, the 29th Busan International Film Festival and Chanel selected art director Ryu Sung-hee as the first winner of this year's newly established Camellia Award. The Camellia Award is given to prominent filmmakers and industry workers who have elevated women's status in various film works. It was established as a Camellia statue with the meaning of camellia flowers, Busan's poetry and first lady Gabrielle Chanel's favorite flower.
