Bong Joon-ho's SF Film 'Mickey 17' Delayed Again, Set for Easter 2025 Release

Bong Joon-ho's SF film 'Mickey 17', which appeared six years after the world's greatest masterpiece 'Parasite'(19), has been delayed once again two months before its release, drawing attention.

American film media Deadline reported on the 6th (local time) that 'Mickey 17', directed by Bong Joon-ho and starring actor Robert Pattinson, will be released on Easter weekend 2025. On January 31, 2025, when the release date of 'Mickey 17' was released, Drew Hancock's horror film"Companion" will enter and meet the audience.

Warner Bros. reportedly decided to release Anton Fukua's Michael Jackson biopic 'Michael' on April 18, 2025, during Easter, but to postpone it and release 'Mickey 17' in its place. In addition, Warner Bros. confirmed the release of 'Mickey 17' on the IMAX screen.

`Mickey 17' is Bong Joon-ho, the first Korean film to win the 92nd Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Film to feature in six years. It is a film adaptation of Edward Ashton's 2022 published novel 'Mickey 7 that tells the story of a clone sent to colonize the ice world nifleheim. Didi Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner of Plan B, off-screen producer Bong Joon-ho and producer Choi Doo-ho of Kate Street Picture Company worked on the production and received a lot of attention for Bong Joon-ho's first Warner Bros. production. For director Bong Joon-ho, it is the second blockbuster to be made into a large Hollywood studio capital after the Netflix film Okja(17).

Casting is also the best ever. Robert Pattinson, one of Hollywood's hottest actors, played the role of the main character of `Mickey 17,' and Tilda Swinton, who emerged as a muse with director Bong Joon-ho for the movie `Snowpiercer'(13) Okja', and Mark Ruffalo, who gained global popularity as a Hulk in the `Avengers' series.

"Mickey 17", which received expectations from all over the world, was said as much as the outpouring of attention until its release. Warner Bros. initially announced a North American release for 2023 'Mickey 17 on March 29, 2024, but canceled the March release due to a massive strike in Hollywood, causing many fans to be disappointed. It didn't stop there. On January 28, 2025, when the release date of 'Mickey 17' was postponed by a year, Warner Bros. changed it to the world's first Korean release rather than North American release.

Of course, in Korea, the Lunar New Year theater was a perfect 'good news' for Korean fans due to the peak season, but the atmosphere was different abroad. Overseas, the January release is not related to the Korean Lunar New Year holiday special, and even in Hollywood, a traditional off-season, the release date of Jan. 31, 2025 has raised a lot of questions. Of course, there was concern that the fact that the SF blockbuster 'Mickey 17', which cost 150 million dollars (about KRW 1975.0 billion), will be released in January theaters, where low-budget films are mainly presented, might actually be Warner Bros. neglecting director Bong Joon-ho.

Naturally, attention was drawn to the controversy over 'Bong Joon-ho neglecting'. U.S. entertainment media Variety also raised suspicions last month by reporting that Warner Bros. is not showing high expectations for 'Mickey 17'. Variety said through an internal source that Warner Bros. considers Bong Joon-ho's 『Mickey 17" to be 's 'sick' compared to other new works, and Warner Bros., conscious of this, is enthusiastic about the film '('Mickey 17') through a spokesperson," he said.

However, these concerns and concerns were reversed through the CinemaCon event held in Las Vegas, Nevada in April. Director Bong Joon-ho, who attended the CinemaCon event at the time, said "'Mickey 17' is a quirky and thrilling movie. It is about an ordinary man who saves the world, and it is a hero's journey with an unfamiliar form. As a result, it's a science fiction movie, but it tells a story about humans. The number '17' in the title is the number of times the main character Mickey died. "I killed Mickey 10 more times than the original."

Above all, coach Bong Joon-ho put a lot of expectations on his first breath with Robert Pattinson. He had a nice, crazy look in Robert Pattinson's eyes. Robert Pattinson seemed able to pull off all of Mickey's variations. What a creative actor he is," Robert Pattinson said, adding, `Bong Joon-ho is like a hero to me. It was the funniest SF movie scenario I've ever read in my life and also grotesque on the other hand. Everything I worked with him was interesting." It heated up fans' expectations again.

Since then, the world's attention has been paid to the teaser posters and trailers, which have been gradually unveiled 'Mickey 17', and as the response has heated up, Warner Bros. changed the release date to the Easter (20 April 2025) season again after discussion, expressing confidence in its success.

Bong Joon-ho's SF Film 'Mickey 17' Delayed Again, Set for Easter 2025 Release
Warner Bros. made great efforts to secure a release date of April 18, 2025 for "Mickey 17". We have a lot of expectations for the new release date of `Mickey 17' and are pleased to be able to present this work to the audience as an IMAX special hall.'

Warner Bros. Korea also said on Sports Chosun on the 10th that `Easter is the peak season in theaters in the United States. With many studios working on the release date, Warner Bros. has also worked hard to occupy the date."'Mickey 17' has received a worldwide response since the trailer was released, and Warner Bros. has also moved its release to Easter due to its box office confidence in 'Mickey 17. Naturally, Korea's first release will also be postponed, which we plan to announce again after final discussions with Warner Bros."

The adaptation of Edward Ashton's new novel `Mickey 7' features Robert Pattinson, Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo, with director Bong Joong-ho of"Parasite" taking the megaphone. It will be released in April 2025.
