According to Sports Chosun coverage on the 30th, the '2024 SBS Entertainment Awards', which was scheduled to be broadcast live at 8:40 p.m. on the 31st, was canceled due to the Jeju Air passenger plane disaster. Live broadcasting and recording are not carried out, and future schedules are undecided.
SBS previously said "No decision has been made" on whether to hold the awards ceremony, but it seems to have decided to cancel it in consideration of the designation of the national mourning period and the aftermath of the disaster.
The cancellation was triggered by the Jeju Air flight accident at Muan International Airport in Jeollanam-do that occurred on the morning of the 29th. Flight 7C2216 from Bangkok, Thailand, exploded when it crashed into the outer wall of the runway, causing massive casualties that killed 179 of the 181 passengers, except for two crew members.
The government designated seven days from the 29th to the 4th of next month as a national mourning period and commemorates the victims.
The SBS Entertainment Awards has drawn attention as a venue to organize the year with viewers and commemorate the hard work of entertainers at the end of each year. However, the decision to cancel appears to be based on the judgment that it is inappropriate to create a festive atmosphere in the face of national tragedy.
An SBS official said "We are discussing whether or not to proceed later and the format after the decision to cancel the meeting" We will announce our official position as soon as the situation is settled" he said.
Meanwhile, the Jeju Air disaster affects the entire broadcasting industry and leads to a series of cancellations of entertainment, awards ceremonies, and festival-related programs. MBC and KBS have also changed major programming to deliver information related to the disaster.
