According to a list of nominees for the 82nd Awards announced by Golden Globe organizers on the 10th, 'Squid Game Season 2' was nominated for Best TV Series Drama. Despite being scheduled to be released on the 26th, it was evaluated as an expected work of the Golden Globe and was selected as a candidate.
Works that have already been released and gained popularity have been added to this category. FX's Japanese background drama 'Shogun' and Netflix series 'Diplomat', Apple TV+'s 'Slow Hossis', Prime Video's 'Mr & Mrs Smith' and Pikok's 'Day of the Jackal' will compete side by side.
Local media such as The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline emphasized the enormous influence and expectations of 'Squid Game Season 2', saying, `It is very unusual for a previous work to be nominated for the Golden Globe.' Typically, U.S. dramas do not release new works in the year-end season, but Netflix has unusually decided to release them in time for the Christmas holiday. This is attributed to the global fandom and Netflix's confidence, which has been proven by season 1.
Eligibility for entries to the Golden Globe Awards is limited to works released from January to December of the year, with a deadline of Nov. 4. Netflix seems to have delivered the complete version of 'Squid Game Season 2' to the Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association (HFPA), the organizer.
Previously, season 1 of 'Squid Game' received great attention at the 79th Golden Globe Awards in 2022 as it was nominated for three categories: Best Picture in TV, Best Actor (Lee Jung-jae), and Best Supporting Actor (Oh Young-soo). At that time, Oh Young-soo was the first Asian male actor to win the Best Supporting Actor Award, setting a historical record.
This season 2 was nominated only for the Best Picture category, but it proved global expectations even before its release, once again confirming the status of Korean content.
The 82nd Golden Globe Awards will be held on January 5 next year at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
