It shouldn't end with simple punishment...Seo-hyun X Ok Taek-yeon Drama Nail to Cultural Heritage → Police Complaint

KBS2's new drama 『Namjoo's First Night』, starring actors Seo-hyun and Ok Taek-yeon, faced a crisis even before it aired. It was discovered that cultural properties were damaged in the process of installing filming props at Byeongsan Seowon Mandaeru, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, causing great public anger.

On the 2nd, architect Min Seo-hong shocked the public by revealing that the staff of 『Namju's First Night』 damaged Byeongsan Seowon, a cultural asset located in Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do.

Byeongsan Seowon, located in Andong, is one of the most beautiful seowon in Korea along with Dosan Seowon honoring Toegye Yi Hwang. It is a seowon built to honor Ryu Seong-ryong of Seoae, and is a representative Confucian structure of the Joseon Dynasty. Historic Site No. 260 and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Architect Min visited Byeongsanseowon Confucian Academy around 3 p.m. on December 30 last year and witnessed an absurd situation. Inside the seowon, items that appeared to be drama props were placed, and several staff members were nailing wooden posts to hang their backs"I looked around and found that there were already quite a few backs hanging from the pillar of the Mandeoru" he said.

Then "An old middle-aged gentleman was protesting against the staff, and I couldn't wait and see, so I asked if it was okay for me to damage cultural assets like that." However, the staff who were working on the work seemed to be bothered. 'I already got permission from Andong City.'" If you're curious, can't you contact the city hall?' 'How many times do I have to explain that I got a permit?' Rather, he began to get angry with his back"It was a shocking situation at the time.

Afterwards, architect Min contacted the Cultural Heritage Division of Andong City Hall, and the official in charge replied that he had given permission to shoot. I asked if the drama staff were aware of the fact that they were nailing a wooden pillar and asked if they had given permission to damage cultural assets. Only then did the embarrassed government official give an answer that he would immediately remove the cultural property and allow it as a filming location. It is deplorable that this happens during the filming of KBS's drama. It is not something that can be dismissed as insignificant.'

Seo Kyung-duk, a professor at Sungshin Women's University who gained fame as a Korean evangelist, also criticized the production team for having the first night of Namjoo. Professor Seo Kyung-duk said on the 3rd that `KBS drama production team has become a big controversy by nailing the pillars of the building to install props at Byeongsan Seowon Confucian Academy, which is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site"In recent years, damage to cultural properties has been serious in Korea. There have been ridiculous events, such as the destruction of the mounds of Seonneung, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in August last year and the graffiti terrorist attack on the wall of Gyeongbokgung Palace two years ago.

He will now have to improve 'citizenship' concerning the importance of cultural properties, not just punishment. In order to do that, above all, we need to strengthen education related to cultural properties from elementary school"With the global spread of K content, many foreign tourists are flocking to experience Korean culture and history." In this situation, we must first make every effort to preserve our cultural assets and preserve them well" he said.

The production team and KBS faced a difficult situation due to the publication of architect Min who was on alert for the first night of Namjoo. KBS hurriedly said on the 2nd that `First of all, I am truly sorry for causing concern to the viewers with this incident. At the end of last year, the production team received permission to film in advance at Byeongsan Seowon in Andong, and in the process of installing props, they received complaints from visitors at the site about how to nail cultural properties and hang props. Regardless of the reason, KBS apologized for the situation that occurred at the scene, saying, "We are sorry to realize the seriousness of the situation."

"We are currently discussing the best way to identify and recover from the situation." Regarding the situation at the time, the drama official is in talks with the officials of Byeongsan Seowon to check the site and to discuss the procedure for restoration. In addition, we will actively discuss measures to prevent recurrence and additional possible damage in the future. KBS once again said, `We sincerely bow down and apologize to everyone for all this incident related to the filming of the drama,' but the public's anger did not go away easily.

The current situation revealed by Andong City through an on-site survey is that the production team nailed six model lanterns, one of the props, to hang from a pillar. The nail marks are 2 to 3mm thick and about 1cm deep each, and the production team nailed five out of six lanterns to the pillar of Byeongsanseowon Mandeoru and deeply embedded them.

The North Gyeongsang Provincial Police Agency also filed a complaint through a civil petition for the National Newspaper. The complainant who accused the production team of having the first night of Namju " is clearly subject to legal punishment for the act of damaging cultural properties by the drama filming team based on Article 92 (1) of the Act on the Preservation and Utilization of Cultural Heritage (Crime of Damage or Concealment, etc.). Even if the restoration procedure has been discussed, it cannot be denied that the damage to cultural properties itself is a legal violation. Andong City, which allowed filming but did not know how to damage cultural properties, also announced plans to file a complaint after receiving legal advice from the production team and KBS.
