Director Bong Joon-ho recently met with Sports Chosun somewhere in Yeouido, Seoul, and the exact release date of "Parasite" is February 2020. It's the first new product in five years, and it's disappointing if you say it's six years."
The film 'Mickey 17' is Bong's return to the Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix and the American Academy Award for the film 'Parasite' (2019). It is based on the American writer Edward Ashton's novel `Mickey 7' and tells the story of Mickey 18, a consumable (expendables) put into dangerous work and reprinted after death, when Mickey 18 was printed thinking he was dead during his 17th death crisis.
Director Bong, who brought a new film for the first time in a long time, said, `It took five years for the movie to be released, but I only took six to seven weeks off in February 2020, right after finishing the Oscar race. I've been working really consistently. I first received the original novel of 'Mickey 17' in the summer of 2020, and I was fascinated by it and started reading the translations chapter by chapter. I wrote the scenario in 2021 and met Robert Pattinson for the first time in November of that year. Fortunately, all the processes went smoothly and well, so we started filming in the fall of 2022, and we had a little bit of a long post-production period for 2023."
As for the reason why the release was delayed, "If it had been released last year, it would have been the right time, but the union strike and the distribution schedule were combined to delay the release of not only this film but also all films by about six to seven months, and the lineup was tangled." The U.S. actors' union strike is so strong that we shouldn't not only shoot but also post-record and promote it. That's why it's being released this year. 'Parasite' was released late in Japan and the UK, so the exact release end date was February 2020. So it's been five years, and it's a shame to say this is the first comeback in six years. Doesn't it feel like I've been hanging out without working (laughs). I didn't have a vacation, and I also prepared an animated movie with Mickey 17\", he explained.
Meanwhile, 'Mickey 17' confirmed its release in Korea for the first time in the world on the 28th. The North American release date is March 7.
