At around 5:50 a.m. on March 7, 2000, the body of a man was found in front of a bus stop in Wando, Jeollanam-do. Kim Shin-hye's late father Kim Jae-hoon was the owner of the body, which was found with broken car parts at the time. Initially, it was believed to have been a hit-and-run traffic accident, but autopsy showed no trauma and a large amount of the sleep-inducing drug doxylamine was detected in severe intoxication.

Based on the fact that it was found in an unaccompanied place 6km away from his father's house, the police suspected that someone had disguised himself as a car accident and abandoned the body. And two days after the incident, Kim Shin-hye, who came down to Wando from Seoul at dawn, was arrested urgently. Police claimed that her early morning activities were unclear and that a note found at the house had written 'a plan to kill her father and disguise her as a car accident using alcohol and sleeping pills'

In the end, police announced that Kim Shin-hye confessed to all the crimes, concluding that she deliberately killed her father for insurance money. However, lawyer Park Joon-young, who was in charge of Kim Shin-hye's retrial, refuted that there were poor investigations, coercive investigations, and inducement of false confession by the police.
