The Korea Music Copyright Association (hereinafter referred to as the Korean Music Copyright Association), the largest music copyright trust management organization in Korea, strongly condemned the years-long failure to pay music copyrights to Mnet, a music broadcasting channel operated by CJ ENM, and again urged immediate settlement and fair use of music.

According to the Korea Music Association, Mnet, a representative of domestic music broadcasting channels and broadcasting various music contents, has not signed a formal contract with the association for the use of music and has deliberately failed to pay copyright fees, and has not even submitted music usage details that are obligated to submit for the settlement of music usage fees under Article 107 of the Copyright Act.

According to the Korea Music Association, Mnet has not paid billions of won in music copyright fees since 2018, and the damage to music creators who make a living from music copyright fees continues to accumulate. In addition, Mnet has not implemented the music usage details that have not been submitted for years, citing that the environment for writing music usage details has not been established.

CJ ENM, which runs Mnet, has built its image as a leader in Korean music and culture through K-CON, which has been hosted since 2012. An official from the Korea Music Association pointed out the dual attitude of CJ ENM, which is benefiting economically through K-CON while failing to pay copyright fees for music used on Mnet, saying, "CJ ENM is raising its brand image by using K-CON as the world's largest Hallyu cultural festival, but is not paying music copyright fees properly. These contradictory forms and offences can never be tolerated.

In addition, CJ ENM's move is likely to spread beyond just one company's problem to a serious problem that could adversely affect the Korean music industry as a whole. As a cultural platform company, it raises questions about CJ ENM's qualifications, and it is necessary to discuss not only their legal responsibilities but also their ethical responsibilities."

The Korean Music Association said "CJ ENM shall submit music usage details as soon as possible and sign a valid music work usage contract to pay a fair fee. This is a minimum measure to protect the rights of copyright holders, and it is a natural obligation that cannot be delayed any longer."
