'Sniper for high school students'Ban Hyo-jin (17, Daegu High School) won the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Ban Hyo-jin won the gold medal in the women's 10-meter air rifle final at Chatoru Shooting Range in France on the 29th (Korea time). It is the first time in 24 years that a gold medal has been won in the women's 10-meter air rifle since Kang Cho-hyun at the 2000 Sydney Games.

Ban Hyo-jin, who shot 104.8 points in the first 10 shots, ranked second, 0.7 points behind Hwang Whiting, showed brilliant concentration in the elimination stage, where the subordinates were eliminated based on the results of two shots. Twice, he hit the 10.9-point target, pushing back Geary Huang Whitting to take the lead on his third chance to fire.




There was also a crisis. In the fifth shot, Ban Hyo-jin scored 10.5 points, while Hwang Whiting shot 10.7 points to tie the score at 200.5. However, Hwang Whiting scored only 10.4 points on the second foot, and Ban Hyo-jin scored 10.5 points, rising to the lead by 0.1 points again.

With the bronze medal secured, Hwang Whiting, Audrey Gognat (Switzerland) and Ban Hyo-jin, who remained in Saro, shot 10.7 points on their sixth shot opportunity, widening the gap with Hwang Whiting. He also shot 10.6 points in his second shot, widening the gap with second-place Hwang Witting to 1.3 points.

The gold shot that followed. Was it because of the pressure. Ban Hyo-jin only scored 9.9 points and 9.6 points in his two chances, respectively, and tied Hwang Witting, who shot 10.3 points and 10.5 points, and entered the shoot-off with 251.8 points. In the shoot-off, Hwang Whiting shot 10.3 points, while Ban Hyo-jin shot 10.4 points to seal the gold medal by 0.1 points.




Ban Hyo-jin is the sixth high school student in the history of the Korean team. He is the youngest ever in shooting and the first high school student sniper in 20 years since Chun Min-ho and Ahn Soo-kyung, who competed in the 2004 Athens Games. In the preliminary round, he became the first player in 36 years to break the Olympic record in the air rifle since Ahn Byung-kyun at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
