Portimonense, a Portuguese club with three Korean players, is expected to be acquired by Chinese capital.

Portuguese media 'Hecord' reported on the 31st (Korean time) "Portimonense's owner will soon change. Chinese Chairman Zhang Jindong, the founder of Suning Holding Group, will lead the club from 2025 with a €80 million (about 120 billion won) acquisition, according to the report.

Citing a club source, the media outlet quoted "Negotiations have progressed very much. The deal included rights to the club's infrastructure, rights to the Autodromo Internacional do Algrave Sports Complex, which serves as a team training centre..." Over the next 12 months, the administration will be gradually replaced.

Chairman Zhang was the owner of the Chinese club Jiangsu Ning and the owner of Italy's prestigious Inter Milan for eight years from 2016 to May. Chairman Jang handed over the chairmanship of Inter Milan to his son, Stephen Jang, who is expected to take on a similar role in Portimonense. Under Jiangsu, Inter Milan won two Serie A titles, two Copa Italy and one European Champions League title.

Portimonense is a club that has established ties with Korean players such as Lee Seung-woo (Jeonbuk), Park Ji-soo (Wuhan), and is well known in the domestic soccer community. 'Seungmaksimeng' Lee Seung-woo played on loan for one season in Portimonense as a member of Sintrawidan in the 2020-2021 season. Currently, winger Kim Yong-hak, a former youth representative, Lee Ye-chan, a duo defender of Yeongdeungpo Technical High School, and Kim Tae-won, a striker, are in the team. Brazilian striker Yago, who moved from Gangwon to Ulsan this summer, also played for Portimonense.

Portimonense, led by former coach Paulo Sergio, was relegated to the second division after the promotion play-off, finishing 16th in Portugal's Primera Liga (first division) in the 2023-2024 season.
