The twisted knot is not coming out.

Jed Spence's 23-year-old transfer negotiations have hit a snag. Tottenham have been negotiating with Italian Serie A side Genoa over the complete transfer of Spence.

British broadcaster Nizar Kinsella reported on the 3rd (local time) that "Genoa has failed to secure a discounted price for Spence despite extensive negotiations with Tottenham".

Spence, who was a member of Middlesbrough, was loaned to Nottingham Forest in the 2021-2022 season and attracted attention by promoting the team to the English Premier League (EPL). In the FA Cup, he was recognized as the future of England with an outstanding performance against Arsenal and Leicester City in the EPL.

Spence nestled at Tottenham in July 2022 under Antonio Conte. The transfer fee was 20 million pounds (about 35 billion won) including options. However, Conte said it was not the recruitment he wanted, and in fact classified Spence as out of power. His playing time was only 41 minutes after being replaced by six games.

Spence was loaned to Stade Rennes in French Ligue 1 in January last year. Coach Enze Postecoglou took the helm this season, but his fate has not changed.

Spence again left for Leeds United in the Championship (Second Division). But there was no reversal. He played only seven games, and returned to Tottenham after his loan ended early in January this year.

He was immediately loaned back to Genoa. There was a twist. He played in 16 Serie A matches, with Genoa in 11th place. The team achieved the best performance among the teams promoted from the top five European leagues.

Genoah hoped Spence would be a complete transfer. However, negotiations over the transfer fee continued for a month, but it broke down. Tottenham set 8.5 million pounds (about 15 billion won) as the lower limit, but Genoa reportedly demanded a lower transfer fee.

Of course, it's not over. If Tottenham lowers the transfer fee further, Genoa is likely to reconsider. But it looks like we need a cooler.

Spence is under contract with Tottenham until June 2027.
