The Korea Professional Football Federation held its 15th reward and punishment committee on the 15th and decided to punish Lee Ki-je with 1.5 million won in sanctions. The K League's disciplinary standards for each type of reward and punishment regulation allow a coach or player to deny the referee's authority and impose suspensions or sanctions for excessive protest or violent dissatisfaction with the referee's decision.
Lee Ki-je is said to have made inappropriate words and actions to the assistant referee in the 20th round of the 'Hana Bank K League 2 2024' against the Ansan Greeners at Suwon World Cup Stadium on the 30th of last month. The assistant referee said he heard inappropriate words from Lee Ki-je during the game. According to the referee's report, the assistant referee immediately informed the referee through a microphone. However, the referee did not stop the game even after hearing the story. After the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw, Lee reached out to the tearful assistant referee at the half-line where both teams and referees gathered to greet each other. But the assistant referee stepped back and avoided shaking hands. Fellow players also appeared to approach and comfort them.
The judging committee commissioned the K-League's governing professional soccer federation to deal with the matter. The Korea Professional Football Association asked the Suwon club for a report to make a decision after hearing both sides' positions. Later, a reward and punishment committee was held to confirm the disciplinary action.
