Japanese national right back Yukinari Sugira (24) has officially joined English Premier League (EPL) club Southampton.

The Southampton club announced on its official channel on the 14th (Korea time) that it has signed a four-year contract with Sugira, a member of Alkmaar in the Netherlands.

Sugira, who spent five years at Eredivisie and played more than 200 matches, including 53 European club competitions, said "Playing in the EPL has been one of my biggest dreams since childhood. I'm really glad. Played Southampton in the pre-season last summer. I felt that Southampton played good football in possession of the ball. They played smartly using only short passes, not long balls. I felt it was a really good club. When Southampton made the offer, he said, "I said yes in a second."

Russell Martin said Southampton had already played many matches at a high level, including his rich European experience. He is a talented footballer with great mentality, and a character who I think will be really popular with his teammates. I like his passion and determination."

Sugira played 13 A matches for Japan. Due to the position, it is inevitable to clash with Son Heung-min in the face-off against Tottenham.

Southampton returned to the Premier League after the promotion play-off in the 2023-2024 season.
