At the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Yeo Gap-soon won her first medal for the Korean team by winning an unexpected gold medal in the women's 10-meter air rifle, and Kang Cho-hyun, a high school student at the time, won her first medal in the same event in 2000. At the 2008 Beijing Games and the 2012 London Games, `Shooting Emperor' Jin Jong-oh gave the Korean team its first medal with a silver medal and a gold medal in the men's 10-meter air pistol, respectively.
This time, he is counting on a mixed 10-meter air rifle. The finals will start at 4 p.m. on the 27th (Korea Standard Time) at France's Satoru Shooting Center, the day after the opening ceremony, and the final round of medals will be held immediately. Among the events in which the South Korean team participates, it is this event that the medal is decided first in time.
It's not just about time. South Korea's shooting, which is aiming for one gold, two silver and three bronze medals, considers the event competitive enough given the recent rise of athletes. The combination has also been confirmed. Park Ha-joon (KT) and Ban Ki-hyun (Gyeonggi Provincial Government) will pair up, while Choi Sang (Gyeongnam University) and Ban Hyo-jin (Daegu High School) will work together. Initially, Park Ha-joon and Ban Hyo-jin, the male rifle ace, were expected to be paired, but experienced Ban Ki-hyun changed members in good condition locally. The two have collaborated on a gold medal at the 2022 Baku World Cup.
Jo Geum-hyun was born in 2000, but he is already 'Mom Player'. Before the International Shooting Federation (ISSF) World Cup in Cairo, Egypt, in October 2022, he learned that he was pregnant, and before giving birth to his daughter in May last year, he entered the competition full-term and even qualified for the Paris Olympics. He made his first Olympic appearance. Ban Ki-hyun, who focused on the Olympics by soothing her longing for her daughter through a video call, even won a gold medal at the World Cup in May. After the competition, Geum Bo-hyun, who wants to have a second child, is preparing a medal as a gift for her daughter.
Ban Hyo-jin is the youngest member of the Korean squad for this year's event. He was born in 2007 and is in the second year of Daegu Sports High School. Ban Hyo-jin, who first grabbed a gun in July 2021 at the recommendation of a friend who was attending Taekwondo gym with him, became a national team member in less than three years. Ban Hyo-jin, who quickly rose to prominence in domestic competitions, has announced his potential by winning international competitions since last year, and ranked first overall in the selection contest for the Paris Olympics in March. The upward trend is unusual, with a silver medal around his neck at the Munich World Cup in June.
Initially, South Korea was expected to have only one team in the mixed 10-meter air rifle, but it gained one more following the International Shooting Federation's quota announcement on the 16th.
In the mixed 10-meter air rifle event, the male and female athletes shoot 30 shots for 30 minutes each in the first round of the finals, and eight teams with high combined scores will advance to the second finals. The highest score of one shot is 10.9, so the perfect score is 654 when men and women shoot 60 shots.
In the second round of the finals, male and female players shoot 20 shots each for 20 minutes to determine the top four teams. At this time, the first and second teams will head to the gold medal match, while the third and fourth teams will play the bronze medal match.
The final round, which is a medal match, has a time limit of 50 seconds per shot. After the male and female players fired one shot each, the high team took two points, and the low team only scored zero points. If it's a tie, you'll get one point each. In this way, the team that reaches 16 points first wins by shooting one shot at a time.
