Jang Mi-ran, the second vice minister of culture, sports and tourism, and Lee Ki-heung, chairman of the Korea Sports Council, held an emergency press conference at the main press center (MPC) in Paris, France on the 27th. This is due to the absurd accident held at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics. About 50 South Korean athletes entered the country as the 48th out of 206 participating countries. Korea entered 48th after Cook Island according to the French language 'Coree' standard, not the English name 'Korea'.
The problem occurred when the Korean team was introduced. The in-house announcer first introduced Korea as 'Republique populaire democratique de coree' in French, and repeated 'Democratic People's Republic of Korea' in English.
Both refer to North Korea in French and English, respectively. The official name of Korea is 'Republique de coree' in French and 'Republique of Korea' in English.
North Korea was the 153rd to enter the country according to the French national name notation. The in-house announcer recognized the mistakes made when entering South Korea, and North Korea properly called out both French and English. Viewers who couldn't see the opening ceremony video and only listened to it with their ears were aware of the Paris Olympics, where only North Korea entered twice without South Korea.
The South Korean government and the sports association immediately responded. Vice Minister Zhang said "Sorry has happened. Immediately after the opening ceremony, he asked the IOC president to meet, and he also asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to cooperate. The French ambassador to Korea also expressed regret and requested an apology. I asked for the prevention of a recurrenceChairman Bach is scheduled to call the President at 8 p.m. Korean time. At 1:30 a.m. on the 28th, a meeting between Chairman Bach and the Paris Organizing Committee was confirmed. Chairman Lee and I are going to be together. As it is a situation in which the people are embarrassed and are very interested, they intend to respond quickly and receive an apology.'
Chairman Lee said, `We found out about the fact at 8:45 p.m. local time on the 26th, and immediately sent the document at 10 p.m. Although it is Korean, an apology came out on the SNS account, and immediately filed a formal complaint with the IOC Secretary-General and the Paris Organizing Committee at 2 a.m. on the 27th. We gathered at 6 a.m. and had a meeting, and we worked closely with IOC officials." He then reported twice to the President. Interviews with us are important, but since the people have to understand, we have requested an official public apology in writing. It is reported that it is currently being sorted out. It will be released as soon as it arrives."
