"You know you're giving away the first set on purpose."

It was the smile of Ahn Se-young (22, Samsung Life Insurance) who is the "Queen of Shuttlecock". Ahn Se-young succeeded in advancing to the final. Ahn Se-young came from behind to beat Gregoria Mariska Tunjung (11-21 21-13 21-16) of Indonesia in the women's singles semifinals at the 2024 Paris Olympics held at Port Drachapel Stadium in Paris, France on the 4th (Korea time). Ahn Se-young, who was eliminated from the quarterfinals as the youngest badminton player at the last Tokyo Games, secured a silver medal with her victory and secured her first Olympic medal. It is the first time in 28 years that she has won a medal in Korean women's singles since Soo Soo-hyun, who won a gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Ahn Se-young, who won gold medals at the World Championships, Asian Championships, and Hangzhou Asian Games, will challenge for the Grand Slam.

Ahn Se-young is the last hope of Korean badminton. From the 2012 London Games to the 2021 Tokyo Games, South Korea's badminton team aimed for the best record ever at the event, with a record of only three consecutive Olympics. He challenged for three gold medals at maximum. Unfortunately, however, he only harvested one silver medal in the mixed doubles. Unfortunately, the men's doubles remained in fourth place, and the women's doubles all stopped their journey in the quarterfinals.

Ahn is currently No. 1 in women's singles at the Badminton World Federation (BWF). He is the world's top ranker who has appeared for the first time in 27 years since Bae Soo-hyun. Ahn Se-young won two gold medals in the women's individual and team events at the last Hangzhou Asian Games with a different level of performance. There was also a medal. He suffered from aftereffects for a while due to a right knee injury suffered in the final of the Hangzhou Asian Games. Ahn Se-young, who focused on rehabilitation, fortunately recovered quickly. Expectations for the Olympic gold medal were raised by winning and finishing second place in the recent Singapore Open and Indonesia Open, respectively.

Ahn got off to a somewhat shaky start to the tournament. He did not show an overwhelming performance in the group qualifying round. He was also psychologically anxious. However, he recovered his original skills from the quarterfinals. There was something that stood out. After giving up the first set, they all came from behind to win. He started the first set a little uneasy, but he showed good performance as time passed, and at the end, he clearly overpowered his opponent. Ahn Se-young, whom I met after the game, said "I'm not giving you one set on purpose. It's because I'm so nervous. I'm trying not to, but it's not easy." Then "It's very burdensome to give a set first. But I think it's a force that keeps pushing me because it makes me more awake." He thinks only one point, rather than having a lot of confidence in being able to turn around. I used to be too greedy and impatient, but as I gained experience, I became comfortable. I think that if I accumulate one point at a time, I can catch up someday."

The good news was delivered ahead of the semifinals. Chen Yufei, who was considered the biggest contender for the gold medal, failed to advance to the semifinals. He lost to the same Chinese He Bing Jiao. All the gold medal contenders were eliminated. Following the elimination of world No. 3 Tai Tzu Ying (Taiwan), Chen Yufei failed to advance to the semifinals, and all the players scheduled for Ahn Se-young's final were eliminated early. Ahn Se-young seems to be overwhelmed and following the luck of the match. Ahn Se-young didn't seem to care much. He said "As I always said, I thought all the players were rivals. Not only Chen Yufei, but all athletes are good, and the Olympics have too many variables. You don't give me a gold medal just because Chen Yu-fei fell." Then "Honestly, I wanted to stick to it. The picture was just cool. Unfortunately, I don't want to think about it because I have to win. No matter who comes up, I will prepare well because I have to put it on me to win."

He finally "I imagine a lot that I'm INFJ. I imagined a lot of ceremonies, and because of this imagination, I couldn't sleep and my body was stiffened. "Because there were many people, I was able to run without giving up on the stage I dreamed of. It's so hard that I feel sorry to let go of my excitement, but I hope you'll support me a lot so that I can finish the game really romantically tomorrow."
