Woo Sang-hyuk (28, Yongin City Hall) failed to win a medal. He finished seventh in the track and field men's high jump final, clocking 2 m27. Woo Sang-hyuk, who holds the personal record of 2m36, was blocked by a wall at 2m31. Korea's first medal attempt at track and field in track and field was also in vain.
Woo Sang-hyuk jumped to fourth place after surpassing 2m35 at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, becoming a world-class jumper. His report card includes winning the 2022 World Indoor Championships (2m34), second place in the outdoor World Championships (2m35), and winning the 2023 Diamond League Final (2m35).
So it was even more regrettable. If he had exceeded 2m35 like he did at the Tokyo Olympics, he could have won the bronze medal. Hamish Kerr (New Zealand), who was beaten by Woo Sang-hyuk until last year, won with 2m36, and Shelby McCuan (USA), who led Woo Sang-hyuk with 9 wins and 6 losses in the showdown, also ranked second with more than 2m36. Kerr and McCuan split first and second place with a jump-off, which is like overtime. 'Best jumper ever' Mutaz Essa Barshim (Qatar) came in third at 2 m34.

The road has begun. Woo Sang-hyuk has reached the top of the Roman Diamond League. He won the men's high jump event at the 2024 World Athletics Diamond League Rome held at Olympic Stadium in Rome, Italy, on the 31st (Korea time). Romain Beckford (Jamaica) also exceeded 2m30, but Woo Sang-hyuk, who had few failures, took first place.
Woo Sang-hyuk crossed 2m15, 2m20, 2m24 and 2m27 all in the first period, and 2m30 succeeded in the third period. Beckford, who narrowly crossed 2m27 and 2m30 in the third period, raised the bar to 2m33 and failed three times.
Woo Sang-hyuk, who was watching Beckford's game after applying for 2m35, finished the game without challenging 2m35 to avoid injury when the championship was confirmed. This is the third time Woo Sang-hyuk has won an individual Diamond League tournament, following Doha in May 2022 and Eugene (Final) in September 2023.

Woo Sang-hyuk, the 2023 Diamond League Final champion, will try to win his second consecutive title at the 2024 Final on Sept. 14 in Brussels, Belgium. In the men's high jump, the top six ranking points advance to the final.
Woo Sang-hyuk has appeared in three Diamond League games this year. He finished third (6 points) over 2 m 28 at the Monaco competition on 12 July, and fourth (5 points) at 2 m 29 in Silesia on 26 August. In Rome, he won over 2 m 30 and won eight points.
Kerr (30 points) and McCuan (19 points), who are the gold and silver medal winners at the Paris Olympics, are ranked first and second in the rankings. Woo Sang-hyuk has the same score as McQueen, but McQueen, who ranked higher in individual Diamond League competitions, came in second.
McCuan finished first, second, and fifth in this year's individual competitions, while Woo Sang-hyuk finished first, third, and fourth, leading McCuan in the final rankings. Jean-Marco Tamberi (Italy), Ole Doroshuk (Ukraine), and Varsim ranked 4th to 6th with 14 points, earning a spot in the Diamond League Final.
