'Suwon Legend' Former Suwon Samsung coach Yeom Ki-hoon (41) will make his first overseas challenge in his career.

A soccer official said on the 6th that `Coach Yeom, who put down his baton in Suwon in May and devoted himself to the youth club Yeom Ki-hoon Jr., will join the Indonesian national soccer team led by head coach Shin Tae-yong (54) as an offensive coach.'

According to the official, Yeom repeatedly suffered after receiving a coaching offer from Shin last month. Coach Yeom, who was scheduled to appear in the soccer entertainment show 『The Strongest Football』, reportedly accepted the coaching position after seeing coach Shin's sincerity and the possibility of Indonesian soccer.

Coach Yeom will leave for Indonesia with coach Shin in the middle of this month and start preparing for the third Asian qualifying round for the 2026 North-China World Cup.

Going to Indonesia is a big challenge for coach Yeom. Coach Yeom made his professional debut in Jeonbuk in 2006, played in Ulsan, and played in Suwon for as many as 13 years from 2010 to 2023. It is considered one of Suwon's greatest legends.

In September last year, Yeom, who replaced manager Kim Byung-soo, who retired due to poor performance, failed to stop Suwon's first relegation. Nevertheless, coach Yeom, who was appointed as Suwon's official coach the following year, showed good pace in the early stages to receive the Coach of the Month award in April, but he eventually resigned in the form of voluntary resignation on May 25 amid the unstable trend of losing five consecutive games. After losing 1-3 to E-Land, he said he would leave in front of Suwon fans gathered in front of the team bus.

Coach Yeom was out of office after resignation. He said he told his aides 'Looking back, I was a frog in a well. The will to leave Suwon, which is still familiar as young, to go to the bigger world and try again began to wriggle. He was likely to go to Chengdu Rongcheng, a Chinese Super League club led by head coach Seo Jung-won, but the timing was not right. While he was working hard on Yeom Ki-hoon Junior, he made a decision after receiving director Shin's love call. This is the first time Coach Yeom has advanced overseas in his career.

Coach Shin and Coach Yeom have never shared a meal with their team, but they formed a relationship as a coach and player on the A national team from 2017 to 2018. When Shin led Seongnam Ilhwa (the predecessor of Seongnam FC), Yeom Ki-hoon was Seongnam's rival Suwon's ace. Although he was never a welcome player when he met at the stadium, it is rumored that coach Shin highly valued Yeom's character and sincerity. Coach Shin, who has been writing history by taking the helm of Indonesia since 2020, is currently accompanied by domestic coaches such as Choi In-cheol, Cho Byung-guk, Kim Bong-soo, and Yoo Jae-hoon. Coach Yeom, a former striker, also seems to have decided that Indonesia is needed ahead of the World Cup qualifiers.

Indonesia was in the same 'Group C of Death' as Japan, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and China in the third qualifying round of the World Cup. An away match in Saudi Arabia and a home match against Australia was scheduled next month. Coach Shin, who extended his contract with the Indonesian Football Association in June in 2027, told 'Sports Chosun"There were countless (love calls) in the K-League. But it was such a waste of the team I've made in Indonesia so far. The third qualifying round for the World Cup is just around the corner. It doesn't make sense. In a way, I was evaluated as a team called Indonesia. In a certain line, I think we should form a 'fruit'." Coach Yeom will help coach Shin's two goals: Indonesia's top 100 FIFA rankings and advance to the World Cup finals.
