Returning to the English Premier League (EPL), Tottenham manager Enze Postecoglou's assistant Matt O'Reilly (23) collapsed nine minutes after he was put in his Brighton debut. Brighton played the second round of the Carabao Cup (League Cup) in 2024-2025 against Crawley Town of League 1 (division 3) at Amax Stadium in Brighton, England on the 28th (Korea time).
Brighton made it to the third round with a 4-0 victory, but O'Reilly's injury prevented them from laughing. O'Reilly's transfer from Celtic to Brighton was confirmed on the 27th.
The Danish native made his professional debut at Fulham in August 2017. After moving to League One's Milton Kins Dunes in January 2021, he moved to Celtic, Scotland's most prestigious club, within a year. The head coach with O'Reilly was Postecoglou, who led Celtic at the time.
He grew up to be the best midfielder in the league under Postecoglou. O'Reilly, who has excellent dribbling, vision, passes, and defense, performed well with four goals and three assists in 20 games in his first season. In his second season, he scored four goals and 14 assists in 52 games, making him one of the top contributors to Postecoglou's domestic treble (triple crown).
Coach Postecoglou continued his performance last season when he left for Tottenham. O'Reilly played in 49 games and received great attention from all over Europe with 19 goals and 18 assists.
O'Reilly's choice was Brighton. Brighton paid a transfer fee of 26 million pounds (about 46 billion won) and succeeded in recruiting him.
O'Reilly made his first start the day after the official, wearing a Brighton jersey. But time stopped in nine minutes. He was injured by a rough tackle by Crawley midfielder Jay Williams and was helped off the pitch by club medics. Brighton coach Fabian Wheeler put Mark O'Mahony in place of O'Reilly.
Fans are fuming that it's the 'worst tackle'. Coach Wheeler said "It doesn't look good, to be honest. I talked to O'Reilly when I left the stadium, and he said he couldn't put weight on his ankle. "Let's watch the close examination first. Players know their bodies best. His response was not good.'
