The Korean Sports Council said "Temporary postponement of the (international skating rink) site contest until the completion of services such as the comprehensive maintenance plan of the Taeneung Training Center and the heritage impact assessment to create the Taeneung Training Center's sports and cultural complex is completed."
As the Cultural Heritage Administration (currently the National Heritage Administration) decided to remove the international skating rink in Taeneung Training Center in 2027, only Wolgyegwan, Seungrigwan, Champion House, Stadium, and underground power plant in Taeneung, which are evaluated as modern cultural properties, will be retained.
In March, seven local governments, including Chuncheon, Wonju, and Cheolwon in Gangwon-do, Yangju, Dongducheon, Gimpo, and Seo-gu in Gyeonggi-do, competed to host the new international skating rink, and the competition was overheated as heads of each local government took the lead. It is known that the site selection will be completed in the first half of this year, but the due diligence schedule has been postponed to September after the Paris Olympics, and the due diligence schedule has been delayed again due to the board's decision on the day.
The Korean Sports Council stated that it intends to temporarily postpone the public offering of the site until the completion of services such as the comprehensive maintenance plan of the Taeneung Training Center and the heritage impact assessment for the creation of the Taeneung Training Center's sports and cultural complex. According to the Korea Sports Association, the Cultural Heritage Administration was launched as the National Heritage Administration on May 17 and the use of existing cultural heritages such as Vershaille Palace and Anvalid at the Paris Olympics became the new standard, re-establishing the direction of research services to create a sports and cultural complex for the designation of modern cultural properties.
Starting next month, the National Heritage Administration will conduct a research service on 12 national symbolic spaces, including Jeongdong Street, Seoul Station, Yongsan Park to International Business District, Han River Boulevard, Memorial Park, Nakseongdae, DMC/World Cup Stadium, Gimpo International Airport, Peace Culture Jinji, Taegangneung/athlete village, Olympic Park, Olympic Park, and Mongchon Toseong through the order of the National Building Policy Committee.
Accordingly, it was concluded that the public offering of the site will be postponed until services such as the comprehensive maintenance plan of the Taeneung Training Center and the heritage impact assessment are completed to create the Taeneung Training Center's sports and cultural complex, and that the site of the Taeneung International Skating Center will be re-promoted if it cannot be used as an ice rink.
Through its own research service, it plans to review the preservation of Taeneung International Skating Center and the construction of 400m international skating facilities underground of the athlete's village stadium designated as a modern cultural property.
Seven local governments, which were scrambling to attract the site after the announcement of the international skating rink site competition, are perplexed by the sudden decision to postpone it. As the possibility of preserving the Taeneung International Skating Center has been highlighted, the preparation process is on the verge of going down the drain. An official from Gimpo City, who was preparing for a briefing session to attract the international skating rink at the Korea Press Center in Seoul at 11 a.m. on the 29th, said "I heard that the international skating rink site contest has been postponed. First of all, tomorrow's bidding briefing is planned to proceed as planned.
