UEFA held a draw for the 2024-2025 European Champions League (UCL) 'League Phase' at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco on the 30th (Korea time). As a result, Kim Min-jae (Bayern Munich) and Lee Kang-in (Paris Saint-Germain) clashed on the stage of the League Phase.
This season's UCL has expanded the number of teams to 36 countries from 32 countries. There has been a change in the way the draw is made. The 36 teams that made it to the finals will be divided into ports 1 to 4 of 9 teams to play the 'League phase' corresponding to the existing group stage. After that, the team that will advance to the round of 16 will be decided. The teams that made it to the finals do not meet with the same league team. In addition, they cannot meet more than twice with teams belonging to the same national league.
For example, teams in the English Premier League (EPL) do not face each other in the 'League phase'. They will meet with other league teams such as Spain's Primera Liga, Italy's Serie A, and Germany's Bundesliga at most twice. As a result, the teams that advance to the finals will face eight different teams four times at home and four times on the road. After finishing all the 'League phases', the top 1 to 8 teams will go straight to the round of 16. The 9th to 24th teams will play a playoff and the winner will join the round of 16. The teams ranked 25th and 36th will be eliminated immediately without advancing to the lower European competition.
