The difference of '5.4㎜' created a myth.
It's the first time in eight years. It is the first time in Olympic history to win a five-sport championship.
In Paris, the city of romance, South Korea's archery team swept all events at the Paris Olympics.
South Korea's archery made an unprecedented history of winning four events (individual men's and women's team events) at the 2016 Rio Olympics. It created another myth in eight years.
The 2021 Tokyo Olympics and archery team event was newly established. The number of events has increased to five. With Kim Je-deok and Ansan paired up, South Korea became the first champion of the mixed team event at the Olympics. He won four gold medals by a landslide. However, he failed to win the gold medal in the men's individual event.
It was different this time.
The crisis was a men's individual event. Taegeuk archers were also world-class, but there were so many outstanding players. It was the biggest variable in all categories.
Kim Woo-jin, Lee Woo-seok, and Kim Je-deok all reached the quarterfinals, but Kim Je-deok fell first.
In the quarterfinals, he met American absolute ace Brady Ellison and suffered a 0-6 shutdown defeat.
Unfortunately, Kim Woo-jin and Lee Woo-seok were in the same group and met in the semifinals. The two players were determined to win or lose after the shoot-off. Kim Woo-jin went to the final.
However, there was Ellison who caught Kim Je-deok.
It was a conundrum. Ellison brought the first and third sets and Kim Woo-jin brought the second and fourth sets.
Five sets of destiny. The two players showed fans around the world how the world's best archers perform.
All three of them are ten ten ten ten. They entered the shoot-off with a 30-30 tie.
Shoot-off is a real sudden death. A single shot determines the gold medal. The score is meaningless. The player who shoots closest to the center target wins.
Kim Woo-jin shot 10 points. However, it was a disturbing 10 over the 10-point line. Also, Ellison's arrow was 10. However, Kim Woo-jin's 10 points were bitten by the inside of the line, and Ellison was bitten by the outside of the line.
Just 5.4mm difference. The distance difference of less than 1cm changed history. Paris (France) = Reporter Jeon Young-ji sky4us@sportschosun.com
