In the women's semifinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics held at the Modern pentathlon Stadium in Versailles, France on the 10th (Korea time), Sung Seung-min scored a total of 1,400 points in fencing, horseback riding, swimming, and laser runs (land and shooting). Sung Seung-min, who finished fourth in Group A, qualified for the final, which is given to the top nine out of 18. Sung Seung-min, who succeeded in advancing to the finals at his first Olympics, is aiming for his first medal.
Modern pentathlon plays a fencing ranking round in which all 36 participants take turns on the first day, followed by a semifinal and a final. In the semi-finals and finals, while the fencing ranking round score is maintained, the equestrian obstacle event and the 'survival' fencing bonus round, swimming and laser run are all held to determine the ranking by the combined score. The top nine players from each group of the semi-finals, who play in two groups of 18, will advance to the final and compete for medals.
Sung Seung-min ranked eighth (225 points) in the fencing round on Tuesday. He also added 293 points with a simple performance that dropped obstacles only once in horseback riding. Although he did not earn any additional points in the fencing bonus round, he finished fourth overall with a time of 2:12.44 in swimming, adding 286 points to finish fourth with a total of 804. Sung Seung-min, who started nine seconds later than the lead in the laser run, which differentiates the starting time according to the performance of the previous events, continued to compete in the second to fourth places and finished in fourth place. In Group A, Kerenza Bryson (UK, 1402 points), Elena Mikelli, and Alice Sotero (both 1401 points, Italy) were ahead of Sung Seung-min. However, there is little difference in scores.
Sung Seung-min was first selected as an adult national team member in November 2021 and has stood out by winning the individual competition at the International Modern Pentathlon (UIPM) World Cup since last year. In particular, he is showing his best skills this season, winning second place at the World Cup twice and becoming the first Korean female player to win the individual competition at the World Championships in June. As she is currently ranked No. 1 in the world, she is considered the first medal hopeful in the history of Korean women's modern pentathlon.
The women's final will be held at 6 p.m. on the 11th.
