Former Cheongju KB coach Ahn Deok-soo (50) has been appointed as the new secretary-general of the Korean Women's Basketball Federation (WKBL).

On the 25th, WKBL appointed former coach Ahn Deok-soo as the general secretary through a general meeting.

Former coach Ahn Deok-soo was a former Kyushu Industrial University in Japan and played for Samsung, a Korean professional basketball team. He served as the secretary-general of the University Basketball Federation from 2000 to 2007, and was appointed as the head coach of Cheongju KB in 2016 after serving as the Chansong Cosmetics Coach of the Japanese Women's Basketball. He led KB to the championship in the 2018-2019 season, but the contract was later terminated due to poor performance.

He has been a KBSN sports commentator since 2021.

Ahn's nomination as secretary-general was based on the full support of new president Shin Sang-hoon. In July of this year, new WKBL president Shin Sang-hoon took office.

In preparation for the 2024-2025 season, Shin reportedly recommended Ahn as the general secretary at the general meeting, and the general meeting also passed the agenda to empower the new president.

Former coach Ahn has both field and administrative experience, including serving as secretary-general of the University Basketball Federation and KB coach. Since he has been coaching the Japanese women's professional basketball for many years, he can play a lot of roles in exchanges with the Japanese B League.

However, there is also a better-than-expected view of former coach Ahn's nomination as secretary-general.

Secretary-General-designate Ahn Deok-soo's term will begin in February 2025, when the current Secretary-General Kim Yong-doo's term ends.

Multiple officials in women's professional basketball said "Current Secretary-General Kim Yong-doo, who worked with the former president, showed stable administrative skills such as the development of YouGirl's basketball, the systemization of the semifinal system, and the expansion of the Park Shin-ja Cup." Therefore, there is no reason to quickly appoint the secretary-general because of the preparation for the season. There is time to make more suitable choices. Director Ahn Deok-soo is not a bad choice, but the appointment perfectly reflects the president's intention."
