"If you look at this now, I think everyone will say 'Good choice'"

It takes courage to realize the dream. You can't achieve it by staying complacent. This is because you can take a step closer to the realization of your dream only when you boldly collapse the fence surrounding you. This is why birds have to break their shells to fly in the sky.

Although it is easy to express in words or writing, it is not easy to implement it directly. There is a person who has done this. Kim Kyu-ho (43, Pyeongtaek City Hall), who competed in the men's 80kg weightlifting class at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, is the main character.

Kim Kyu-ho ranked fourth among nine participants with a final 202kg record in the men's 80kg weightlifting (powerlifting) class held at Port Drachapel Stadium in Paris, France, early on the 7th (Korea time). Kim Kyu-ho, who succeeded in 202kg in the first period, failed 207kg in the second period. Kim Kyu-ho, who was fourth until then, applied for 216kg in the third period to beat Rasul Mohsin (Iraq), who was third with a record of 215kg. I pushed the bar up with all my might, but I couldn't fully straighten my elbows. Failed. Still, Kim smiled brightly and greeted him as if he had taken on a challenge without regret. He was also fourth in the final standings.

Although he did not win a medal, Kim Kyu-ho showed the true face of 'Challenge for Dreams'.

I left my stable job and devoted myself to exercise. And I finally achieved my dream of 'Entering the Paralympics'. Although his final goal of winning a medal was unfortunately canceled, he is satisfied because he has already performed on the Paralympic stage he wanted.

Kim Kyu-ho, who lost his right leg in a bus traffic accident in 1985 when he was 4 years old, was 'banker' from 2012 to the fall of 2021. Banks are generally recognized as one of 'ideal workplaces'. Even non-disabled people can join the company only after fierce competition. Kim Kyu-ho joined Woori Bank in 2012 as a special screening for the disabled and worked in the financial information team for about 10 years. It received some recognition within the company, and a stable income was guaranteed.

Above all, it was a dream job for the mother who wanted her son, who was injured in a car accident as a child, to work as an office worker.

But 'stable office worker' was my mother's dream, not Kim Kyu-ho's. His dream was to be on the Paralympic stage. In order to achieve that dream, I had to leave the bank. The Paralympic stage is not a place where you can come with both work and exercise.

When Kim Kyu-ho said he would quit the company to participate in the Fall 2021 Paralympics, most people around him stopped him. Kim Kyu-ho once tried to quit in 2018 as well. At that time, my parents and wife were against it a lot. Neither the company nor the friends 'This is not it. He said, `I have to keep going.'"But when he said he would quit again in 2021, the opposition seemed to have decreased by more than 50% compared to 2018. Still, there was still one person who told me 'wrong choice'. But looking at this now, I think everyone will say 'Good choice'."

Then "I thought I could become a top-ranked player from next year." I thought a lot that I would be able to become an athlete who is aiming for a gold medal from the next Paralympics" showed confidence.

Finally, Kim Kyu-ho thanked his family. He is a father of three children.

Kim Kyu-ho said "All three of them, Tan, a fourth-grade elementary school son, Su-ah, a third-grade daughter, and Chan, a first-grade son, are not sleeping and cheering." I talked to my family on the phone before the game, and I told my wife, "Are the kids not sleeping?" and she said, "I'm going to sleep after watching my dad play." "The first one was 'Dad, fighting." I sent a message saying, 'Cheer up. My wife (Kim Eun-joo) also sent me a long message of support"The family's support was a great help on the Paralympic stage," he said.
