World-class defender Mats Hummels turned down Tottenham and headed to AS Roma.

European soccer transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano reported on his personal SNS on the 4th (Korea time) that 'Hummels is heading to Rome'

Romano agreed upon all the details. Hummels is heading to Italy as flights confirmed ahead of medical tests. The annual salary is 2 million euros (about 30 billion won), and the contract period is until June 2025.

A Bayern Munich youth native, Hummels joined Dortmund on a full transfer in 2008 on loan. After that, he returned to Bayern Munich for a while in 2016 and then to Dortmund again in 2019. At Dortmund, Hummels stayed for a long time, scoring 38 goals and 23 assists in 508 games. Hummels, who consistently showed off his world-class defense through only the top teams of Bayern, Dortmund, and the German national team, ended his 13-year journey at Dortmund and broke up due to the expiration of his contract in June, becoming a free agent.

Hummels had a long career in football, so attention was paid to whether he would retire, but he did not choose to retire. His skills have already been proven. Despite his old age of being born in 1988, Hummels showed a solid defense in the 2023-2024 European Champions League (UCL), leading Dortmund to the final. Hummels, who played full time in all games in the UCL, showed constant defense, ranking No. 1 in the UCL this season in defensive indicators such as tackle and clearing.

Several clubs have been named with Hummels, including Tottenham. England's TBR Football reportedly held talks after Hummels left Dortmund. Coach Enze Postecoglou said he wanted to strengthen his defense through him.

But Hummels' choice was not Tottenham. He chose Rome and left the German stage for Serie A for the first time since his debut. Juventus and AC Milan were also interested, but Hummels' choice was Rome.

Veteran defender Hummels, who Tottenham and several big clubs missed, will move to Rome. A lot of attention is also expected to be paid to his performance on the Serie A stage.
