Son Heung-min's contract has recently become a hot topic at Tottenham because his contract expires after the 2023-2024 season. Tottenham, which had no move on its future with Son Heung-min, finally decided to issue only a one-year extension.
Ben Jacobs, who is fluent in European transfer market information, said on Give Me Sports in England that `If Tottenham announced a one-year contract extension, and Son Heung-min did not participate in the process, I think Tottenham is not desperately trying to sign Son after 2026," he said, expressing his thoughts.
Then he added "Tottenham's leadership is delaying the renewal of Son Heung-min's contract until the end. Tottenham explained the reason why Son Heung-min has not been desperately renewing his contract with Son Heung-min since 2026, saying, "Considering his age and the development of the club, it is better to say goodbye naturally after 2026."
In other words, Tottenham is not sure that Son Heung-min will show the same performance anymore in 2026. Jacobs thinks that if Son Heung-min was confident that he would continue to perform well in the future, there is no reason for Tottenham to trigger only a one-year extension.
If Jacobs' claim is true, it is also understandable that Son Heung-min recently announced the renewal of his contract. Son Heung-min said "We haven't had any conversations yet. It's a very clear situation for me. I'm very focused on this season"We haven't received an offer from Tottenham to renew the contract."
Jacobs said, `It is normal not to have a direct relationship with the player until Tottenham decides what is the best approach, so Son has no choice but to wait. That's probably why he said 'I haven't had any conversations with Tottenham yet'," he added.
