The Korea Sports Council held a sports hero selection committee on the 24th and selected auditor Ha Hyung-joo as the Korean sports hero of the year among the three final candidates.
Ha, who was selected as a sports hero, won more than 200 medals during his career, including the first gold medal in Korean judo at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, making him the best judoka of the time.
After retiring as a player, he was appointed as a professor of physical education at Dong-A University in 1987 and has worked hard to cultivate his younger students by serving in major positions such as the president of the University of Arts and Sports and the head of sports for 37 years.
In addition, he established the Korean Youth Sports Cultural Center (1999), led the 2002 Busan Asian Games, and continued his efforts to contribute to the development of Korean sports, including consulting on various national sports policy directions.
Since then, he has been appointed as a standing auditor of the Korea Sports Corporation in August 2022 and is considered to have contributed greatly to improving the integrity of executives and employees by making efforts to create a transparent and vibrant organizational culture, including the establishment and operation of the Active Administration Innovation Committee and the introduction of the first non-real name proxy reporting procedure in the sports community through the "safe lawyer" system.
"I feel overwhelmed and proud as the first generation of the Olympics at the news of the selection of a sports hero," said Ha Hyung-joo" and "I will continue to strive to contribute to the development of the Korean sports world by setting an example worthy of the title of hero in the future."
