An unexpected variable occurred.

KIA Tigers 'Big Pitcher' Yang Hyun-jong collapsed. Yang Hyun-jong allowed four hits (three home runs) with one walk, two strikeouts and five runs in two ⅔ innings in Game 5 of the 2024 Korean Series against the Samsung Lions at Kia Champions Field in Gwangju on the 28th. A total of 41 pitches.

Yang Hyun-jong, who became the winning pitcher with one earned run in five ⅓ innings in the previous second game. With KIA leading with 3 wins and 1 loss in the series, expectations were high that he would finish the finale after winning the Korean Series in 2009 and 2017, respectively.

However, Yang Hyun-jong collapsed from the first inning.

Yang Hyun-jong, who gave up a walk to the first batter Kim Ji-chan in the top of the first inning, handled Ryu Ji-hyuk and Kim Heon-gon, respectively. However, a 133-kilometer slider sprayed from 2B2S on Diaz was concentrated in the center, and Diaz did not miss it and kicked it up to connect it to a two-run shot. In the subsequent at-bat, Kim Young-woong was sprayed with a 130-kilometer slider in 1B1S, but this ball was also concentrated, and Kim Young-woong scored his third run as he connected with a superior back-to-back shot. Yang Hyeon-jong caught Park Byung-ho with a fly ball to the second base and finished the first inning only.

While KIA scored a chase point in the bottom of the first inning, Yang Hyun-jong seemed to find stability by throwing out the first half of the second inning. However, after one out in the top of the third inning, Ryu Ji-hyuk was induced to fly a normal fly ball to right-center, but anxiety grew as center fielder Socrates and right fielder Na Sung-beom missed the ball while delaying. Yang Hyun-jong struck out Kim Heon-gon, but a 143km fastball sprayed into the middle in the 1S match against Diaz was attacked, leading to a two-run shot with consecutive at-bats.

Eventually, pitcher coach Jung Jae-hoon took the mound and was handed the ball to Yang Hyeon-jong. Yang Hyun-jong, who spoke with catcher Kim Tae-gun for a while, unfortunately moved to the dugout. It was a disappointing exit from the big pitcher, who expected another drama.
