The new head of the Korean women's handball team has been confirmed. Lee Gye-cheong (56), head coach of Samcheok City Hall, will take the helm.

The Korea Handball Association confirmed Lee Gye-cheong as the new head coach of the women's handball team through the approval of the board of directors on the 31st of last month. Coach Lee is preparing for the Asian Women's Handball Championship to be held in India in December. The handball association plans to select the team on the 1st and start full-scale training at Jincheon Training Center on the 11th.

Director Lee began his leadership career at Incheon Sunhwa Women's Award (currently Incheon Business High School) in 1998 when he was 30. He took the helm of Samcheok City Hall, a business team, in 2004. Since then, Samcheok City Hall has been placed at the top of the women's division several times. Samcheok City Hall is considered a representative powerhouse in the H League. He won the overall title in the 2022-2023 season and was the runner-up in the championship game in the 2023-2024 season.

He has also made several achievements as head coach of the national team. Coach Lee made his debut as a national team leader in 2002 as a coach for the women's junior national team. In 2014, he surprised the world by coaching the women's junior national team. At the time, Lee led the team and became the first Asian country to win the World Women's Junior Championships in Croatia. This is the first time Korea has won the competition, which was founded in 1977.

Coach Lee has also made achievements as the leader of the A team. He gave South Korea a gold medal at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games. Coach Lee was called up urgently just over five months before the tournament, but he united the team to reach the top of Asia.

Coach Lee will return to the leadership of the A team for the first time in six years. I have a lot of homework to do. Korean women's handball has bowed down in a row at big tournaments in just a year. In the final of last year's Hangzhou Asian Games, he shed tears after being completely defeated by Japan. At the Paris Olympics, he recorded only one win and four losses in the group stage. South Korea packed early without advancing to the tournament.

Korean women's handball was once considered the strongest in the world. At the 1988 Olympics in Seoul and 1992 in Barcelona, he won the title for the second time in a row. In the Olympics alone, he won a total of seven medals, including two gold medals, four silver medals, and one bronze medal. The Korean women's handball team has advanced to the Olympic finals for 11 consecutive times since the 1984 Los Angeles Games. A new chapter in Olympic history. However, it is assessed that Korea's current international competitiveness is not the same as before.
